Soon after the conclusion of the Boxing Day Test between Australia and India in Melbourne, Mahendra Singh Dhoni announced his retirement from the five-day format with immediate effect, citing he was strained playing all formats of cricket. A BCCI press release said, "MS Dhoni has decided to retire from Test cricket citing the strain of playing all formats of cricket." The release also added that Dhoni wanted to concentrate on ODIs and T20Is from now on.

Dhoni, who took over as captain of the Indian Test team in 2008, has ended his five-day career, having played 90 Test matches. He finished with 4876 runs, 6 hundreds, 33 fifties and 294 dismissals. Below are some of the statistical highlights of India's most successful skipper.

There had been increasing pressure on Dhoni as a captain in Tests overseas particularly after Virat Kohli's impressive showing as skipper in the Adelaide Test.
